The sea floor is about to get a little smarter. CSignum, a Scottish startup, has raised €6.9m to expand its cable-free underwater communications technology. The firm’s system sends real-time data through water without the wires and high-maintenance equipment common in subsea industries.

The funding, announced in April, comes from local and international investors including Archangels, Par Equity, Scottish Enterprise and British Business Investment. Offshore sectors such as wind power, ports and aquaculture are under pressure to cut costs as they expand. CSignum hopes to seize the moment.

“This is about unlocking data from the ocean in real time without the constant burden of maintenance,” says Jonathan Reeves, the company’s boss. He claims the technology makes offshore work safer, cheaper and more sustainable.

Industry veterans have long complained of the hassle and cost of subsea cables, which are prone to damage and expensive to install and repair. CSignum’s solution promises fewer breakdowns and better monitoring of offshore assets. Its timing looks good. Europe’s green energy push is boosting offshore wind, while ports and fish farms face growing scrutiny over their environmental impact.

Even so, change at sea is often slow. New technology can take years to gain trust in conservative industries. But the rising need for low-maintenance, eco-friendly systems gives CSignum a fair chance. The fresh capital will fund expansion in Europe, North America and other key offshore regions.

The market for subsea communications is set to grow. Wireless systems may help reduce costs and improve safety. As clean energy ambitions rise, the waves may soon carry not just power but data too.
